MARCUS REED — Male, Black, late 20s Marcus is calm, observant, and grounded. He works at the neighborhood coffee shop Good Cup and initially appears to be an ordinary man trying to get through another night at work. He is naturally reserved and doesn’t seek attention, but he notices more than he lets people know. When a mysterious customer and two police officers enter the shop, Marcus becomes caught in an increasingly unsettling situation. As the night progresses, his connection to the events becomes more personal than he initially realizes. The actor should be able to communicate a lot through subtle reactions, silence, eye contact, and controlled emotion. Marcus is not constantly expressive; much of the character’s internal conflict should be visible without being spoken. Performance qualities: grounded, naturalistic, emotionally restrained, observant, vulnerable beneath a calm exterior. Casting note: Strong dramatic acting ability and comfort with emotionally intense scenes are important.
