Mouthpiece Short Film
12 year old Louie Perez, battles economic hardship and a dysfunctional family while preparing for his first youth football season. Synopsis We meet Louie standing in a dark, empty football field watching a couple slow dance to a Mexican ballad under a bright spotlight. It’s a recurring dream that is a premonition and a reflection. The next morning, he sells chocolates at the supermarket to raise money for his football fees, but he’s unsuccessful. On their way home his 18 year old brother, Junior, makes a stop to visit his girlfriend and Louie finds the cash he needs to pay his fees in the center console, but leaves it in fear of getting caught. Back home, Louie overhears his mother, Aida, struggling to pay bills when he remembers that his chocolates are still in the backseat of the car. He finds them melted. As a last resort, he picks out some money from the center console. That night Aida gets ready for a date while Louie waits for his dad to pick him up, but he bails. Luckily, Junior doesn’t notice any missing bills before leaving for work. Despite their circumstances, Louie and Aida dance together to salsa music. The next morning Louie makes it home with his football equipment secured, but Aida leaves to give grandma a ride home from church. Louie does his best to act normal by trying on his helmet and boiling water for his mouthpiece, but Junior spots a chocolate stain on his center console while washing his car. He grabs Louie by his face mask and smacks his keys against his helmet. Louie begs him to stop, but Junior continues interrogating him. When Louie finally manages to get his helmet off, the keys smack him on the eye. Aida comes home to a bloody mess. After some intense yelling, she sits them down and forces them to reconcile. That night, Junior helps Louie mold his mouthpiece. Somewhere in the quietness comes a wave of comfort. They drive to a local high school, sneak onto the football field and play catch together sharing a moment of brotherly love and forgiveness.
