Synopsis

When the signs of a once-in-a-generation ecological event begin stirring on her family's West Tennessee land, a hard-living Memphis nightclub owner rides home to perform the ritual her lineage demands and to face the one she left behind without saying goodbye. Legacy, identity, and land collide. Distribution Plan: Holler will premiere at the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia in April 2027 as the anchor film of a traveling solo exhibition. The exhibition will tour premier institutions across the country, positioning the film for sustained visibility within the museum and gallery world before entering the festival circuit. Following its institutional premiere, Holler will pursue a targeted festival run across top-tier film festivals, with particular focus on platforms that celebrate independent, experimental, and culturally specific work. The festival strategy will run in tandem with the traveling exhibition, allowing each institution to amplify the film's cultural footprint and each festival to extend its reach beyond the art world. Holler will seek a streaming home with a curatorial platform aligned with its vision and audience after the museum and festival runs. Themes: Spiritual inheritance, Belonging, Landscape-as-refuge, Matrilineal relationships Genres: Western, Neo-Western Tone: Magical Realism, Southern Gothic, Lyrical Naturalism

Additional Information: Supported by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage's Grant. About the Writer-Director: Allison Janae Hamilton is an artist and filmmaker whose cinematic work is defined by its haunting visual language, atmospheric world-building, and mythic engagement with the natural world. As a writer- director, she is deeply influenced by the rural American South: she was born in Kentucky, raised in Florida, and her maternal family's farm and homestead lie in the flatlands of western Tennessee. Hamilton's relationship with these landscapes forms a cornerstone of her work, particularly her interest in how the American landscape contributes to our ideas of "Americana." Hamilton's art and films weave magical realism, environmental histories, gothic aesthetics, and regional folklore into richly textured narratives that explore the connections between people, land, and ancestral inheritance. Her films and immersive installations have been presented at major museums and film festivals, including the BlackStar Film Festival, and her film Wacissa was recently acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Hamilton was accepted into the Sundance Institute's Feature Film Program Development Track for her screenplay, Floridaland, as part of the 2026 Sundance Screenwriters Intensive Fellowship. Hamilton is a recent winner of the Guggenheim Fellowship, and has also won the VIA Art Fund Production Grant and Creative Capital award. Hamilton has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, including at the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), MASS MoCA, Storm King Art Center, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, MoMA PS1, and Fundación Botín. Her work is held in major collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, The Menil Collection, the Nasher Museum of Art, the Hood Museum, and the Hessell Museum of Art.
