Four New Series Streaming in October 2022 You Won’t Want to Miss

If it’s a new month, then it must be time for plenty of new TV on your streaming services at home. October is not just the time for scares— though there is plenty of room for that, as you will see below— but also for some comedy, some drama, and the arrival of a series that has been in development for longer than the streamer airing it has existed.

Shantaram

Based on the bestselling 2003 semi- autobiographical novel by author Gregory David Roberts, the 12-episode series follows the adventures of an Australian escaped convict who travels to India on a stolen passport and disappears into the streets of Mumbai. Bank robber Lin (Charlie Hunnam, returning to TV eight years after Sons of Anarchy ended its seven-season run) finds himself in this new land, eventually opening up a free health clinic in the slums, where he becomes a local legend. Various attempts have been made over the years to bring this to screens big and small, but this successful version was developed for TV by veteran writer-producer Steve Lightfoot. The sprawling epic features a cast just as expansive, including Antonia Desplat, Elektra Kilbey, Alexander Siddig, Sujaya Dasgupta, David Field, Rahel Romahn, Fayssal Bazzi, Elham Ehsas, Rachel Kamath, and dozens more. It premieres October 14th on Apple TV+.

From Scratch

Starring and executive-produced by Zoe Saldaña and produced by Reese Witherspoon, the limited series is based on author Tembi Locke’s memoir about a woman studying abroad in Italy who meets her soulmate and builds a life with him. After he dies unexpectedly of illness, she must pull herself through her grief to raise their daughter alone. Saldaña’s first foray into live-action television in more than 15 years is adapted for the small screen by Locke’s sister Attica, herself an experienced writer-producer who worked on Witherspoon’s Emmy-nominated 2020 limited series Little Fires Everywhere. The eight episode series, which premieres October 21st on Netflix, stars Italian actor Eugenio Mastrandrea in his American television debut as Saldaña’s ill-fated love, alongside an international cast including Roberta Rigano, Ruby Kammer, Saad Siddiqui, Jonathan Dylan King, and Paride Benassai.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

The Oscar-winning filmmaker and master of horror returns to television with this anthology series, in which he has invited what he refers to as a “dream team” of filmmakers to create their own horror stories (though del Toro did write two episodes himself), in a show he hopes will “challenge our traditional notions of horror.” Filmmakers like The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night’s Ana Lily Amirpour, and Cube’s Vincenzo Natali join Del Toro’s eight-episode series, which also features plenty of impressive on-screen talent. Geena Davis, Andrew Lincoln, Rupert Grint, Martin Starr, Sofia Boutella, Kate Micucci, Nia Vardalos, F. Murray Abraham, Eric André, and Peter Weller headline the series, which will debut October 25th on Netflix, but rather than premiering all eight episodes at once, the streaming service will drop two episodes per day in the lead up to Halloween.

The White Lotus, Season Two

Technically not a new show, true, but since The White Lotus is an anthology series, and this second season has an almost entirely new cast, we felt it qualified. The six-episode first season won a bevy of Emmys, and the success only means that there’s higher anticipation for the second season, which sees Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid return for a new vacation, this time in picturesque Sicily. Joining her on this go around are F. Murray Abraham (clearly very popular this month), Michael Imperioli, Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, Haley Lu Richardson, Adam DiMarco, Tom Hollander, Will Sharpe, Simona Tabasco, and Leo Woodall. The first episode of the seven-episode second season drops on HBO Max October 30th.

Whether you choose Shantaram, From Scratch, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, or The White Lotus for your October watchlist — or all four — you can enter into the month with our top picks of the new series premiering on streamers that are full of notable performances to watch.
