Within Minutes
“Within Minutes” begins with Quincy, a 24-year-old Black man, enjoying a Basketball game with his young neighbor Khalil. When he gets back to his apartment, the clock reads 9:30 AM. Music plays as he showers, cooks breakfast, dances around the kitchen, chats with his mother over the phone, and makes plans to help her later that afternoon. Their conversation is warm, full of love and familiarity. His plans are simple: breakfast, errands, and then helping his mom with a wasp nest outside her home. The tone shifts abruptly when there's a knock at the door—9:34 AM. Officer Sharp, a 38-year-old white police officer, has arrived in response to a noise complaint. What begins as a calm encounter turns tense as Officer Sharp questions Quincy about a firearm visible in his home. Quincy explains he is a legal gun owner, but his words go unheard, overshadowed by suspicion. In just a few escalating moments, a misunderstanding becomes a confrontation. Quincy, trying to de-escalate and justify, finds himself on the wrong side of the gun. A struggle ensues—brief, desperate, and tragic. Two shots are fired. By 9:37 AM, Quincy's life ends, echoing the all-too-familiar stories in headlines across America.
