Synopsis:

About the film: but first, what is a dragoman? "1400AD-An interpreter; strictly applied to a man who acts as guide and interpreter in countries where Arabic, Turkish, or Persian is spoken." (OED) In "The Dragoman Looks for the Lost Girl," a lonely man's life unravels when a broken hourglass releases a cascade of sand in all facets of his life, coinciding with a haunting vacuum cleaner advertisement, all while he searches for a long-lost love. Tone: Magic realism, surrealism, absurdist dark humor; for example, the main character (Bernardo) works at a “microsecond loan office,” a preposterous business model of lending millions for a microsecond. He inherits a goldfish “Frank” who he starts to bring everywhere. ABOUT THE ROLE: BERNARDO: Hispanic, curly hair, ideally a 30ish old male. Character has a quietness to him, he is like a wallflower, soft-spoken, contemplative, wide-eyed to the world around him. Many shots of Bernardo having a kind of zoned out demeanor to him. Roles: [BERNARDO] Curly hair (ideally) mustache. 25 to 38 years old, Hispanic, Indigenous, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Mixed Ethnicity, Pacific Islander, South Asian, Southeast Asian, West Indies/Caribbean man. he wears a light blue/periwinkle suit througout the film ABOUT THE ROLE: BERNARDO: Hispanic, curly hair, ideally a 30ish old male. Character has a quietness to him, he is like a wallflower, soft-spoken, contemplative, wide-eyed to the world around him. Many shots of Bernardo having a kind of zoned out demeanor to him. Ideally has a kind of surfer-y accent (the male equivalent to a ditsy accent; a kind of stoner cadence to his voice) Bernardo is a lonely man who is fixated on the first hand he ever held-a girl who disappeared in the water at the beach where he first held her hand. He is looking for a hand to hold, and is haunted by his neighbor, who's shadow of her hand appears on the opposing exterior wall every night. At the beginning of the film, he accidentally smashes an hourglass as he is trying to find the longest palindrome in a crossword puzzle. Throughout the film, he is still searching for this palindrome. Sand starts to mysteriously fill his life, even at his work: a “microsecond loan office,” (a preposterous business model of lending millions for a microsecond) all while an uncanny vacuum advertisement pops up in all other corners of his life. One day, during his telemarketing call, he comes across a "Maria" who he tries to sell a microsecond loan to. She has the same name as the first girl whose hand he held, but doesn't speak English. They use their robotic phone translators to communicate to each other, but will Bernardo be able to reach this Maria again? VIEW ATTACHMENT
