Girlie
It's 1995 and almost thirteen year old Gertie Solomon is determined to kiss a boy. After that failed experiment, she innocently comes out to her Evangelical Christian parents (Janet and Ira), who are convinced that prayer, chiropractic treatment, and positive role models will chase away the "spirit of gayness". Fast forward to the year 2000. Gertie is now a withdrawn high school senior, performing straightness for her family (including older sister, Annabelle) and boyfriend, until a prom night breakup forces her sexual identity back to the surface. The rest of the film is a split screen between Gertie's new life at a small conservative Christian college where she bonds with the secret queers and falls hard for an older student, Summer. Back home Janet hides a dire diagnosis (assured by her faith that she will be healed). When Gertie accidentally outs herself to her very ill mother, the family and their worldview starts to collapse. Gertie returns to school where she faces betrayal, heartbreak and expulsion. Meanwhile Janet is on her own strange, final journey. Their stories collide when Janet bursts into Gertie's suspension meeting and tells off the Dean. An improv wedding becomes a weird, joyful catharsis for the whole family, who are losing their religion, but finally finding each other.
