Firefly
Project Details
Logline: A radio host who hasn’t seen a firefly since childhood starts hearing voices in the woods telling her how to bring them back. A grounded carpenter, despite his doubts, helps her build something impossible, and they fall in love along the way. Synopsis: Leia, 35, is an Atlanta radio host whose job is filling the silence. When Declan, a confident, outdoorsy carpenter, arrives to fix the window frames of her old house, their conversations drift from the work to the porch, and from small talk to the stars. Over a series of warm summer evenings, they talk about science, space and the things they’ve lost. Leia confesses that as a girl she saw fireflies every night, and now there are none. Together they theorize about why: climate change, shifting habitats, even the strange physics of spacetime. Declan has his own big dream, a practical plan to use technology to grow plants on the moon. Their talk becomes a quiet argument between wonder and reason, and each of them is a little of both. Then Leia begins hearing voices in the woods. They ask her to do specific, strange things, all leading toward one goal: bringing the fireflies back. Declan doesn’t believe her, or at least he isn’t sure, but he stays. When the voices ask them to build a lake, he picks up his tools. Building it together, they fall in love. By the time the water fills, what they have is already real, whatever the voices were. On the final night, they sit on the porch as the dark comes in, and one by one the fireflies return.
