El Canto DE Luz

EL CANTO DE LUZ is a bilingual drama following Luz, a young 16 year old Latina girl whose passion for music is suppressed by her household duties as the oldest daughter. She manages the household—cooking, cleaning, and getting her siblings ready for school each morning as her single mother, a hardworking hotel maid carries the financial burden. Beneath Luz's dutiful role, lies a talented musician yearning to reclaim her identity. Music was once a connection she shared with her father, who was deported and ultimately passed away in his home country of Mexico. He carried with him a deep hope for his children to thrive in the US. What remained of him lives in the old letters he sent her, that Luz keeps tucked away inside her violin case. When an opportunity to audition for the school mariachi is offered by the music teacher, Mr. Pena. Luz is denied by her mother who is unable to see past the responsibilities she needs Luz to carry. This is a story about duty, sacrifice, and the courage it takes to want something for yourself when everything around you says you can't.
