Tony and Margot Wendice appear to have rebuilt a calm life after years of strain and Margot’s brief affair with writer Max Halliday. But Tony’s charm masks a colder plan. Having married Margot for her wealth, he now intends to secure it by arranging her murder. He recruits an old acquaintance, the desperate Captain Lesgate, and crafts a meticulous scheme. When Margot fights back and Lesgate is killed, Tony scrambles to frame the incident as self defense against a blackmailer. With Max’s suspicions and Inspector Hubbard’s sharp eye closing in, Tony’s perfect plan slowly collapses around him.
