Synopsis

LOGLINE When 17-year-old Mexican housekeeper Carmelita Torres refuses to submit to a humiliating border delousing procedure in 1917, her quiet act of defiance ignites the Bath Riots, transforming an ordinary worker into a forgotten symbol of dignity, courage, and resistance. SYNOPISIS In 1917, seventeen-year-old Carmelita Torres crosses the border from Ciudad Juárez into El Paso each day to work as a housemaid. But when a new policy forces Mexican workers to strip, undergo chemical delousing, and surrender their clothing for fumigation before entering the United States, Carmelita refuses. What begins as one young woman standing her ground quickly grows into something much larger. As other women at the border rally behind her, Carmelita’s quiet act of defiance ignites what would become known as the Bath Riots: a remarkable protest against the humiliating and discriminatory treatment of Mexican workers at the U.S.–Mexico border. Based on true events, Carmelita is a story of dignity in the face of dehumanization and the unexpected power of one person willing to say no. Carmelita was the first Latina to lead a protest for Mexican rights. At just seventeen years old, Carmelita Torres became the spark of a resistance that history would largely forget.
