Project Details
In Lima, restaurant owner Mateo Quispe gets an extortion note: pay S/3,000 in three days or his family dies. A bullet is included for motivation. Mateo goes to the police, who tell him to just pay. His wife Valeria wants to push the police harder. Mateo wants to hide the situation from their son Adrian; Valeria refuses to lie to him. Mateo's brother Victor shows up angry that he found out secondhand. He argues that the extortionists won't stop even if paid and offers a gun as the solution, citing how their father once scared off robbers without firing a shot. Mateo refuses, saying retaliation would get them killed. With one day left, someone leaves a bloodied box outside the restaurant, delivered by a helmeted motorcycle rider. Inside is the couple's cat, killed as a warning, with a note reading "Tomorrow." Mateo decides to flee and tells Valeria to pack. On payment day, instead of paying or fighting, Mateo and Valeria close the restaurant, dance together in their beloved space one last time, and leave by taxi. Victor stays behind and wanders through the empty restaurant, stopping at an old photo of Mateo and a pregnant Valeria. The same motorcycle rider pulls up. Victor greets them with a thumbs-up and waves them inside. The rider enters the restaurant, the door closing behind them, leaving Victor's connection to the extortion plot ambiguous. The script is a short, tense piece about the impossible choices extortion forces on ordinary people: pay, fight, or run. The final scene recasts everything that came before, suggesting Victor's "solution" may have been something darker than brotherly support.
