About the Job
Rosa is a 90-year-old Mexican woman nearing the end of her life. Though physically healthy for her age, her mind is slipping away. She spends much of the present-day story almost completely still and nonverbal, seemingly disconnected from the world around her. Inside, however, Rosa is fighting desperately to hold onto the memories of her daughter. This is an extremely subtle and physically restrained performance. Much of Rosa's story must be communicated through her eyes, breathing, tiny movements and moments of recognition rather than dialogue. For most of the film she appears almost absent, making the eventual moment when she recognizes her daughter extraordinarily important.
