The Mother
About the Job
Female Presenting | 40s-50s | Chinese. We welcome performers of all gender identities who can authentically embody the role. A first-generation Chinese immigrant mother raising her daughter with the only tools she was given. This role requires nuance and complexity. The Mother loves her daughter deeply, but expresses that love through discipline, control, and punishment. She is not cruel for cruelty's sake; she genuinely believes she is preparing her child to survive in a difficult world. We want to see the internal conflict of a woman who knows she is hurting her daughter, yet believes she is acting out of love. Must be able to count in Mandarin Chinese. Supporting Role. Dramatic material involving striking a child. A fight choreographer will be provided.
