About the Job
Thomas Middleditch meets Toby Flenderson. Soft, nervous, gentle. Not lazy — overwhelmed. Not shy as a person — specifically avoidant about one thing. Think of someone who dreads making phone calls but is perfectly fine in every other context. He tries to talk his way out of things but he’s such a bad liar that nothing comes out. Everyone can tell, which is what makes him sympathetic rather than annoying. You’ve worked with this guy. You’ve maybe been this guy. This is a lead role that’s almost entirely non-verbal — the core performance is a single repeated gesture performed three times with escalating defeat, from confident to reflexive to begging. Needs to convey anxiety, relief, and vulnerability with almost no words. The less he speaks, the funnier and sadder he needs to be physically.
