About the Job
Physical: Jewish or from Judea. Practical, modest clothing. Intelligent eyes, gentle hands scarred from medical work. Hair covered or pinned back. Carries herself with quiet competence. May look perpetually tired from the emotional toll of her work. Background: Trained in medicine in the East (Alexandria), possibly came to Rome due to a being exiled because of her unconventional practices. Works as the ludus physician, treating gladiators' wounds so they can fight again tomorrow. Lost her lover who was tortured into testifying falsely against Aurelius. She is morally exhausted from the cycle of healing men only to send them back to die. Has access to extensive medical knowledge including poisons. May use mercy killings on fighters she believes won't survive. Struggles with opium abuse (brought in from her Alexandria connections) to cope. Motivation: Reduce suffering where she can, though the system makes that nearly impossible. Helps Aurelius because one of the tortured conspirators who testified against him was her lover. Arc: Seeks meaning in a job that feels meaningless, must decide if any action matters in a machine designed to kill.
