About the Job
Emma is Mark and Emily’s daughter, a college-age young woman who starts out entitled, bratty, and completely aligned with her mother and Jamie. At first she defends Emily’s “friendship” with Jamie, adores expensive bags and allowances, and treats Mark as an embarrassment and deadweight. Over the course of the story, she discovers the hidden savings he’s put aside in her name, the worn-out shoes he never replaced so he could give more to his kids, and the truth of his sacrifices. Emma’s arc is a big emotional pivot: she moves from contempt and complicity to guilt, active intervention (warning Mark about Jamie’s scheme), and heartfelt pleading for her parents. She becomes the emotional bridge between Mark and Emily at the end, begging Mark to visit her dying mother.
