Like Zoom auditions, virtual callbacks have become the norm in recent years. While this may be exciting for those who don’t want to leave the comfort of their home for an in-person audition, it comes with its own set of challenges.

For example, maybe you don’t have access to a studio and are planning to do the callback from your living room. Or maybe the area you live is having construction done next door and you need to find a way to block out the noise. There’s even a chance your roommate has company during this time.

Here are five tips for actors to help keep things professional during a Zoom callback.

Insights: Quick Zoom Callback Advice

  • Ensure a professional setup for your Zoom callback by checking your internet connection, having a stable mount for your device, and a quiet environment. Dampen any outside noise with rugs or blankets and inform anyone in your household to minimize interruptions during your audition time.
  • Just as with in-person auditions, thoroughly read and rehearse any provided materials. Double-check the audition time, especially for different time zones, and have the Zoom link ready in advance. Treat the callback with the same professionalism and preparation as you would a live audition.
  • Create a self-tape quality presentation with a solid backdrop, effective lighting, and appropriate makeup. Keep your framing and eye lines in mind to maintain a professional visual impression. Eliminate any personal or distracting elements from the camera’s view.
  • Adopt your pre-audition rituals to get into a professional mindset, even if you’re at home. Conduct physical and vocal warmups, listen to music, or engage in any activities that help you focus. Be prepared for potential delays and have a contingency plan for technical issues.
  • Approach the virtual callback with a positive attitude, conveying your personality as you would in a face-to-face meeting. Be friendly, personable, and let your unique traits shine through, even through the screen. Own your space and have fun, making the most of the home-court advantage.

Cover the Logistics Before Your Follow-up Audition

As you would with a professional Zoom audition, read and reread any audition material sent to you. It’s easy to get complacent when you don’t have to go anywhere for a callback, but it is extra important to stay on top of things. Casting directors now have the added hassle of organizing online callbacks. Check and double-check Zoom links (aka your callback URL). Have them up ahead of time. Make sure you’re reviewing and prepping sides like normal.

Casting directors may also be in different time zones, so double-check that you have the correct information for your Zoom callback.Think ahead to how you will be filming yourself. Will you be on your laptop or cell phone? Make sure you have a sturdy and reliable way to mount your device for a good angle.

Control the Environment for a Seamless Audition

When you’re home distractions will always find you, creating disparate callback scenarios. Try to troubleshoot possible interruptions that may occur during your callback session. When the audition location is in your house, be sure to secure pets, alert family or roommates to stay clear and make sure all devices (not just your own) are silenced. Has anyone ordered something that may arrive during the callback time? Is any scheduled maintenance happening during your audition timeslot?Try to clear the decks as much as possible.

If you live in a noisy neighborhood, do your best to dampen the sound with rugs or blankets and try to find a quiet space to film. If you have washing machines, a loud AC or any appliance that might make a lot of noise, try to neutralize it ahead of time. It’s a lot of preparation, but it’s worth it to make sure the only thing they are focusing on is you.

Treat it Like a Self Tape Audition

Just because it’s not a self tape audition, don’t skimp on the presentation. Make sure you have a solid backdrop, good lighting, makeup, etc. You want your visual to be as strong as the initial audition. Try to keep home details out of frame to eliminate distraction. Don’t forget to pay attention to eye lines and framing.

Plan Ahead to Ensure a Successful Zoom Audition

It can be difficult to get in the professional mindset in your living room. Do what you need to do to “tune in.” Listen to music, do a physical and vocal warmup as well as whatever you might do before going to a regular callback (remember to check your callback URL, too).

Mentally prepare yourself that casting might be running behind. If possible, have a backup plan for any technical difficulties. Put effort into giving yourself the space to have a full professional experience. You need room to focus on the work.

Don’t Forget Your Personality!

Like your Zoom auditions, you might not be in the room, but casting directors still want to know who they might be working with. Do what you need to do to be relaxed and friendly, and greet them with the same warmth you would in person.

While virtual callbacks may require an adjustment, there’s no reason you can’t have fun with them. You have the home-court advantage. You get to arrange and craft your professional environment to suit you. Own your space, breathe, and have fun!
