About the Job
Mid-30s, Spanish, 5’8 to 6’1 in height. Historically he was barrel-chested, but tall and long is viable as well. Medium-length, dark, beard/mustache. Cortes in this production needs to come across as a force of nature in only a few lines. Historically, the man was a highly skilled orator and tactician; a thoughtful, precise demeanor should reflect that. This comes along with a sort of controlled yet frantic energy, like that of a gambler; in his cameo, he describes that the expedition is facing long odds (for neither the first nor the last time). The physical build of the actor is fairly flexible; the main constraints are that he cannot be overweight or portly. Facially, long hair and a beard is preferred – paired with a facial structure that is not inherently “attractive,” but is nevertheless highly striking and memorable. We’re aiming to see someone who aims to interpret and play a person, rather than a historical figure; in this case, it’s a whirlwind of a man who’s setting up a Hail Mary play for the lives of hundreds of men, yet has the charisma and presence to sell Diego on it.
