The caretaker of Herr Wolf’s estate, his penchant for gambling ignites the film’s plot when Gunther loses the estate, which he used as collateral for a misguided bet. Gunther is the first antagonist of the film. His loyalty to his Nazi employer combined with his personal failings make him both threatening and tragic.
