About the Job
George is a rough, middle aged alcoholic who’s been a fixture in the dusty outskirts of town for years. Once a ranch hand with promise, his life unraveled through bad luck, cheap whiskey, and worse decisions. He adopted Little Boy Donovan under the guise of giving the orphan a home, but what he really wanted was someone to do the hard, dirty work around his run-down ranch. George Hankin’s temper burns fast fueled by alcohol and self-loathing and Donovan often becomes the target of his rage. He works the boy hard, berating him for mistakes, forcing him to clean up after the livestock, and offering little kindness in return. The townsfolk whisper about what happens on that ranch, but most turn a blind eye. Beneath his cruelty, George is a man eaten alive by regret haunted by his failures and the ghosts of people who once cared for him. He’s a symbol of how bitterness and neglect can twist a man into something barely human, and how power over the helpless can corrupt completely.
