Nini is eleven, and she is the mother of her mother’s house. In a second-floor East Oakland apartment with broken blinds and an empty refrigerator, she cares for her baby brother, protects her little sisters, and invents sugar bread when there is nothing left to eat. When every spoon in the kitchen disappears, Nini’s search leads to a shoebox hidden in her parents’ closet—and the heartbreaking truth about her mother’s addiction. After a dangerous illness lands her in the hospital, home offers no easy answers, only a quiet act of love that gives the story its name.
