In a near-future America under an increasingly authoritarian administration, Amelia Flores, a Mexican-American mother battling metastatic cancer, struggles to keep her life intact after her husband, Ricardo, is taken by ICE without warning. Left to care for her teenage son Raphael, Amelia navigates the crushing weight of illness, mounting legal bills, and the emotional toll of their separation. To survive, she engages in transactional relationships with men who offer her money in exchange for intimacy, balancing her dignity against the need to provide for her family and fund the search for Ricardo. Through quiet, detailed routines—cooking, cleaning, caring for Raphael—the screenplay reveals her resilience in the face of systemic injustice. Raphael, deeply shaken by his father’s disappearance, experiences anxiety and fear that Amelia may be taken next. Their conversations explore generational trauma, identity, and survival under a government targeting immigrant communities, even those with legal status. News broadcasts within the story document the mass deportations and unlawful detentions, underscoring the political climate’s hostility. Amelia is a slow-burn, character-driven drama that weaves domestic intimacy with political urgency, portraying the fight to preserve love, hope, and humanity when the world feels engineered to take them away. It’s both a personal portrait of a mother and son in crisis and a broader commentary on resilience against oppression.
