The Man
8 Years In The Desert, Part Deux
About the Job
A weathered, deliberate man standing alone in the Sonoran Desert — the kind of person shaped by years of quiet endurance. He is a chain smoker with a moral compass he hasn't entirely abandoned, even as he finds himself complicit in something he knows is wrong. He's methodical and self-possessed, using small rituals — lighting a cigarette, taking his time — as a way to assert control in a relationship that has clearly worn him down. He carries a deep, unspoken respect for things that have survived the test of time, and a barely concealed contempt for those who don't. This is a role that demands restraint; the performance lives in what he doesn't say. Ideal for an actor who can command a scene through stillness and internal conflict. Physical Requirements CRITICAL — The Man's hands are on screen in extreme close-up for approximately 40% of the film. His hands must: - Look like working hands — some roughness, visible wear, not soft or manicured - Be dexterous enough to convincingly use a pocket knife, cut through a garden hose, cut the top off a beer can, fold aluminum edges, handle a cigarette, and syphon diesel through a hose - Show visible veins and tendons — the camera will be in macro close-up The actor must be comfortable with: - Extended physical sequences with minimal dialogue (the syphoning preparation is 2+ minutes of silent, procedural action) - Smoking unfiltered cigarettes on camera (or herbal substitutes that look identical) - Kneeling on rocky desert ground - Working in extreme desert heat (June in Tucson, Arizona, 95-100°F) - Sitting on a metal truck tailgate - Driving an older manual or automatic truck
