Charles is Nyjah and Tyrell’s father, a police officer in Compton who is trying to hold his family together in the wake of a recent separation. He’s disciplined, protective, and emotionally restrained, the kind of man who doesn’t say more than he has to, but whose care is always present underneath the toughness. He carries the weight of responsibility in his body and voice, and there should always be a sense that he’s tired in a deeper way than he lets on. The performance should balance authority with humanity: he can be stern, funny, impatient, and loving, often all in the same breath. What makes him powerful is that he isn’t just “the dad” or “the cop” — he’s a man trying to do right inside systems and circumstances that are already pulling him apart.
