About the Job
Zella comes from a family where: Alcoholism is normalized, Money replaces accountability, Men are indulged and Women absorb the emotional labor. Her uncle Matteo is a long-term hard working functioning alcoholic: Charismatic when sober, Obnoxious, aggressive, and inappropriate when drunk. Enabled for decades under the guise of “family”. No one confronts him directly—except Zella’s mother. Matteo is not just an addict—he’s a resource. People tolerate him because: He has a very good job making alot of money and he buys their affection. Once he stops being useful, he becomes disposable. That contradiction enrages Zella.
