Marianne
Pretty Weeds
About the Job
Supporting. Female, 30s–50s, open ethnicity. A longtime member of the support group who takes quiet pride in her role within it. Marianne presents as warm, kind and well-meaning, but beneath that is a more controlling, judgmental edge. She’s observant to a fault, often inserting herself into situations under the guise of being helpful. The type who asks too many questions, notices what isn’t her business, and subtly positions herself as close to authority (a bit of a “teacher’s pet” with Helen, the support group leader). Marianne is socially confident in a way that can feel excluding, especially to outsiders. She’s not overtly antagonistic, but her tone, timing, and presence can make others feel scrutinized or unwelcome. She wants to be close friends with Kate and tolerates or pities Judy. (Very slightly inspired by Helen Harris Bridesmaids and Barbara Covett Notes on a Scandal but less on the nose and more subtle, Marianne's frumpy style is in contrast of her need for control in social situations, she is a bit out of date on trends) Note: Looking for an actor who can balance charm with underlying tension—someone who can play “nice” while letting a sharper, more intrusive quality seep through. 2 days of shooting.
