About the Job

Sumner is a sharp-tongued, fiercely self-protective young woman who has spent years armoring herself against a reputation she never chose, one that was thrust upon her by a careless act of humiliation in middle school. She is goal-oriented to a fault, preferring to plan her emotional and physical milestones with clinical detachment rather than risk genuine vulnerability, as evidenced by her strategy to lose her virginity on her own terms before college. Beneath her combative exterior is someone deeply wounded by the people who should have protected her, particularly her brother, and who struggles to believe she deserves someone who will truly have her back. Her growth throughout the story hinges on learning to let her guard down not because a plan demands it, but because she genuinely wants to.
