Project Notes

The pursuit of Hollywood gold With and Without a Visionary behind you. note: In two more weeks my schedule becomes 100 percent clear to simply create. Looking toi shake it up big this year Many future artists come to LA to seek fame. Some do it the traditional way through continuous auditions, finding an agent and manager and remixing all of that with continuous auditions. Then there is the rare situation where a talent hooks up with a visionary and the two create a path. You can actually do both. Here is a guide of sorts that breakdowns the differences: The Traditional Route An actor comes to LA and finds an agent and a manager. The two professional entities find work or negotiate deals on the talents behalf. This is the tried and true route. The difference in 2025 as opposed to lets say the 80s and 90s is that due to social media, many more people want to be stars. The competition is fierce. One character in a project that pays a simple amount such as $225 per filming day, may garner three hundred submissions within 2 hours. Imagine how many submissions ones gets for projects with higher pay. The industry is flooded with dreamers and this is one of the reasons why icon Spielberg said that the era of the Superstar is over. There is no knocking this way however cause it is the standard and the success ratio is solid. However this is a new era where branding and likes are beating their 'proverbial chests'. Muse/Actor-Director Duo Shockingly this is a super effective route to Hollywood that very few take. The rare actors that have taken it have found incredible success such as Idris Elba and Cilian Murphy. An actor that inspires a creator is magic. I'm not talking about manufactured chemistry, I am talking about the kind that is just there, that exists through osmosis if you will. I used to think it was something that could be created. You meet a talented actor and write for them. However I have come to realize that in order to catch the biggest prize, it is probably something you can't ask for. Its either there or its not. Imagine as an actor having a conversation with a visionary. The actor's movement, style and conversation conjures up not only several plot lines, but also a Hollywood strategy from the visionary. After Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan met at Starbucks near Universal Studios some 13 years ago for the first time, they both felt the chemistry. When they left that meeting, Jordan knew that Ryan was his mentor and Coogler knew that Michael was his muse. After the boys created much success and fanfare with Fruitvale Station, Ryan called heavyweights in Hollywood (Stallone, Murphy and more) in order to secure elevated projects that he could direct for his muse. Not just typical, mundane fair but work tied to legendary franchises. This is strategy and an actor's advantage against waiting for an agent to find work. The mentor/creator made work happen. Ryan was in a vision territory that a black creator had never attempted before. His success with Fruitvale had opened doors and he was using that illumination to secure success for he and his muse. He could have gone and worked with proven, more successful black actors at the time. However he stuck with the same energy and today, three years past a decade, they both sit at the highest plateau one can sit in Hollywood. Had Ryan left his inspiration, there may have never been a 'Sinners' 13 years after that lifechanging meeting. However it was that connection, that loyalty, that energy and the awareness they brought to fans, that has turned Sinners into Golden Globe Gold and potential (and almost guaranteed) multiple Oscar nods.
