Mark’s mother appears in key flashbacks as a frail but loving woman on her deathbed, holding onto a pocket watch she intends to give him. Her scenes are brief but emotionally pivotal: she embodies Mark’s unresolved guilt over missing her final moments because he was caring for Emily. Her memory lives on in the pocket watch Emily later smashes, triggering one of Mark’s fiercest emotional breaks.
