Sgt. Avery is a soldier in the Red Ball Express during WWII. He is "lifer" and actually enjoys being in the Army. He has a hard exterior but also has a streak of compassion. He is a bit curmudgeonly and grumpy but his men respect and follow his orders. The actor can determine if Avery is from the South, NYC or Chicago. He is highly intelligent but not educated. He is Army-wise and will often go behind the back of officers to do what is right.
