About the Job
JAMES WILLAMS
25 to 35 years old; African, Black; man. Slightly gaunt or worn-down appearance; unkempt hair or facial scruff; hands that look like they belong to a musician (calloused, expressive). Must feel tired but still carry an ember of beauty/charisma beneath the roughness. Personality: Sensitive but self-destructive. Quick to anger when criticized, but underneath is deeply vulnerable. Witty, defensive, and sarcastic — uses humor as a mask. Haunted by his absent father and terrified of failure. Starts as a man drowning in addiction, shrugging off responsibility. Slowly reveals his fear of becoming his father and his shame over wasted potential. In the end, unable to face Syd’s love or his own demons, he leaves — breaking their fragile bond. Appears in every scene. Emotional core of the film alongside Syd. LEAD
