About the Job
[Actor must speak Patois OR be efficient in reading with a Jamaican dialect]
A pragmatic Jamaican immigrant, Tanya has spent decades in the U.S., working tirelessly to provide for her family. Outspoken and often emotionally guarded, she has been shaped by the hardships of her upbringing in Jamaica and the sacrifices she made to build a life in America.
Tanya’s relationship with Maya is complicated. While she loves her daughter, she struggles to express it in ways Maya understands. She is often critical, particularly of Maya’s career choices, believing that survival—not passion—should be the priority. Though she wants Maya to succeed, she fears her daughter is squandering opportunities. Their dynamic is further strained by Tanya’s clear favoritism toward Christina, whose academic and professional achievements align with her own vision of success.
Beneath her tough exterior, Tanya carries unspoken regrets—memories of a past in Jamaica that she rarely shares. When Maya begins digging into their family’s history, Tanya resists, dismissing it as unnecessary. But as Maya persists, Tanya is forced to confront the truths she has long buried, leading to a reckoning between mother and daughter over identity, sacrifice, and the cost of assimilation.
