Four New Movies Streaming in October 2022 You Won’t Want to Miss

Before we tell you about four new series streaming in this month, it’s time to shine some light on a few features. This being October, there are plenty of scares to be had, including a highly anticipated reboot, a new film based on a story by the legendary Stephen King, and the final chapter in one of horror’s longest running and most revered franchises.

Hellraiser

A remake of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic, a young woman struggling with addiction finds an ancient puzzle box, not knowing that solving it summons the sadomasochistic extra-dimensional beings known as Cenobites. The first film spawned nine sequels, but this remake was in development hell for years before Hulu picked up the rights in 2021. Sense8 star Jamie Clayton takes over as the iconic villain Pinhead, with Odessa A’zion as protagonist Riley, and a supporting cast that includes Brandon Flynn, Drew Starkey, Aoife Hinds, Adam Faso, and Goran Visnjic. Following in the footsteps of original Pinhead, Doug Bradley, Clayton knew she had big shoes to fill. She said of her work in the film, “I’m hoping that it’s something really unique. I mean, Doug is incredible. But I didn’t want to be sort of compared or have people be like, oh, she nicked that from him. She’s doing that thing that he did, which is another reason why I think they wanted a woman to play the role, because it takes the burden off the audience of that comparison.” It hits Hulu October 4th.

Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

Horror is certainly one of cinema’s most popular genres, but it’s fare to say that, within that category, Stephen King is a genre all by himself. The prolific author has had dozens of his works adapted to both movies and television, and the latest is based on one of the Maine native’s short stories. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone follows teenaged Craig (Jaeden Martell) who befriends and does odd jobs for the titular old man, played by Donald Sutherland. When Mr. Harrigan dies, Craig slips the man’s smartphone into his pocket at the funeral. After he leaves his dead friend a message, the boy is shocked to get a return text. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Cyrus Arnold, and Alexa Niziak round out the cast of the horror flick, which debuts on Netflix October 5th.

Catherine Called Birdy

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham stays entirely behind the camera for this highly anticipated period piece, based on the children’s novel by Karen Cushman. The 13th century tale of a 12-year-old girl sold into marriage by her social climbing parents, it doesn’t seem like it would be in Dunham’s wheelhouse, but it has apparently been a passion project of hers for years. “I first read it when I was 10, which was perfect because it was a little advanced for me so I felt a little naughty reading it. I was in a Barnes & Noble with my dad and had probably read a quarter of it on the walk home. Then it became something I just reread over and over again.” That passion translates to the film, which has an undeniable charm. Game of Thrones star Bella Ramsey stars as Catherine (called “Birdy” because of her numerous pet birds), with Fleabag star Andrew Scott as her father, and Billie Piper as her mom. The fairly incredible cast is rounded out by Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Isis Hainsworth, and Russell Brand. It premieres October 7th on Amazon Prime.

Halloween Ends

What more needs to be said about this most storied of horror franchises? Jamie Lee Curtis became a star when she first played Laurie Strode in the 1978 original, and she brings her story to a close with one last turn in the role that made her famous. This installment is the third in the most recent trilogy, starting with 2018’s Halloween, followed by 2021’s Halloween Kills. In this climactic battle between good and evil, Curtis’ Laurie once again comes face to face with her evil, supernaturally-powered brother Michael. “I am her, and I’ve been her for a long time,” the actress said of the role. “That relationship is the most important professional relationship I will ever have.” Curtis’ final performance as Laurie Strode is joined by Andi Matichak as her granddaughter Allyson, as well as Will Patton and Rohan Campbell. It debuts in theaters and on Peacock October 14th.
