New Movies and Series Streaming in March 2023 You Won’t Want to Miss

From college basketball tournaments to St. Patty’s Day, the new month is synonymous with more than a few events. But the big news this month that we’re here to talk about is all the new movies and series dropping on streamers in March. Thanks to our top picks of the upcoming titles, you can cut through the plethora of options out there straight to some must-see projects releasing this month, as well as keep an eye out for the performances to watch in each.

Films

Faraway

Just in time for International Women’s Day, Jane Ainscough’s Faraway is being touted as “a movie made by women, for women.” The upcoming German production centers on Zeynep Altin (Naomi Krauss) a 49-year-old woman who’s pushed around by both her daughter and aging father, as well as by a husband who ultimately proves to be unfaithful. After the death of and near-disastrous funeral for her mother, Zeynep travels to the Croatian isle of Solta to rediscover herself in a house there that she inherits. The only hiccup is a local islander named Josip, the former owner of said residence, who is still living on the property. We’re getting some serious Under the Tuscan Sun vibes from the film’s trailer, and this may be just the right movie for anyone ready for a little pick-me-up after the dark days of winter. Plus, besides taking in the performance from Krauss, you can also enjoy the work of other international actors like Goran Bogdan, Adnan Maral, Bahar Balci, Vedat Erincin, Artjom Gilz and Davor Tomić when Netflix releases Faraway come March 8.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Fans of the crime drama Luther can rejoice. After the popular series ended its five-season run on the BBC, the long-awaited standalone follow-up movie is almost here. Netflix will release this month the upcoming original feature, which sees Idris Elba reprising his role as the titular Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. In Luther: The Fallen Sun, a serial killer is terrorizing London, and the disgraced detective breaks out of prison in order to capture the cyber psychopath taunting him. The film boasts some serious star power besides Elba, such as Andy Serkis, who plays the demented killer in the upcoming crime thriller. Then there’s Cynthia Erivo as Detective Chief Inspector Odette Raine, who becomes Luther’s unlikely ally. And let’s not forget Dermot Crowley, who returns as Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk, Luther’s former boss and friend. You can catch all these performances and more when Netflix releases Luther: The Fallen Sun on March 10.

Tetris

In need of a Cold War-era thriller on steroids? According to Apple TV+, its upcoming based-on-a-true-story feature about the origins of a popular video game includes “double-crossing villains, unlikely heroes and a nail-biting race to the finish.” Who knew a film about the game of Tetris and its rise to worldwide popularity could be so intriguing? But the film’s trailer backs up the streamer’s claims, teasing plenty of action and even violence in the upcoming movie. Tetris centers on Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton), who discovers the titular game in 1988 and takes incredible risks to travel to the Soviet Union, where he works with its inventor Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov) to make Tetris known to the masses. Besides Egerton and Efremov, you can also keep an eye out for names like Toby Jones, Sofia Lebedeva and Anthony Boyle when Tetris releases on Apple TV+ come March 31.

Series

UnPrisoned

Kerry Washington executive produces and stars in the upcoming Hulu comedy loosely adapted from the life story of author and series creator Tracy McMillan. UnPrisoned follows Paige (Washington), a single mom and relationship therapist whose father Edwin (Delroy Lindo) comes to live with her and her teenage son Finn (Faly Rakotohavana) upon his release from a 17-year stint in prison. And while the series may fall under the genre of comedy, Washington discussed with Vanity Fair how telling the show’s story also came with intentionality and purpose. “Maybe if we can portray and normalize this experience [of incarceration] in how we talk about family, we can have the courage to look at it and ask ourselves if it’s okay with us,” Washington noted. “We want to step into the humanity in all of its complexity — its poignant moments, and also its hilarious moments.” The actor shared in the same interview that neither she nor Lindo have previously been thought of as comedic actors by the industry at large, so you can take in for yourself their upcoming foray into the genre when UnPrisoned premieres on Hulu on March 10.

Up Here

For all our musical fans out there, this one’s for you. From the director of Hamilton, the screenwriter of Tick, Tick… Boom! and the songwriters of The Book of Mormon comes Up Here. The original musical series stars Mae Whitman as Lindsay, a woman who moves from her small Vermont town to New York City in pursuit of discovering her true self. There, she hits it off with a man named Miguel (Carlos Valdes), but their hopes of newfound love are challenged by the inner voices that they both can’t seem to quiet. The period piece takes place at the end of 1999, and its stacked roster also includes actors like Katie Finneran, Sophia Hammons, Emilia Suárez, Andréa Burns, John Hodgman and Scott Porter. You take in all the cast for yourself when Up Here premieres on Hulu on March 24.

Unstable

We understand the conversation around “nepo babies” is still happening, and a la Jamie Lee Curtis’ recent SAG Awards acceptance speech, we’re going to address it head on with this pick. The upcoming Netflix comedy series Unstable stars Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe as an onscreen father/son duo. Taking a page out of Eugene and Dan Levy’s book, the two co-created with Victor Fresco the new workplace sitcom about a successful and potentially narcissistic biotech entrepreneur named Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe). Ellis begins to struggle after the tragedy of losing his wife, and as the title suggests, becomes less-than-stable. Enter his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who comes home to help deliver the family company from potential disaster so its employees can continue working toward a certain technology that might just change the world. The upcoming series boasts an impressive cast list outside of the father/son duo, with Sian Clifford portraying a formidable CEO at the Dragon company and Rachel Marsh and Emma Ferreira playing brilliant scientists there. Plus, you can catch Aaron Branch as a project manager at the company, who’s also Jackson’s best friend. You can view the work of all these actors and more when Unstable premieres March 30 on Netflix.

From the feel-good feature Faraway to a real-life father-son duo series Unstable — and some varied picks that run the gamut from thriller to musical in between — this has been our list of new movies and series streaming this month that you don’t want to miss. And whichever titles make it onto your March watchlist, each one comes packed with plenty of noteworthy performances to take in.
