3 Films Coming to Home Audiences in March and the Performances to Watch
Awards season is upon us, and films at the center of the surrounding buzz are receiving a lot of attention. A number of last-minute contenders, such as Lee Daniels’ The United States vs. Billie Holiday, just released before the eligibility period for this year’s Oscars ended on February 28. But, films released from now until the Academy Awards air on April 25, may get overlooked in all the awards season hubbub. We’re here to provide three fresh options for your watchlist that are coming to home audiences in March, as well as the performances to note. We’re all excited to see what happens at this year’s awards shows, but in the meantime, don’t miss some upcoming releases that you can screen from the safety of your own space.
Moxie
This is not your average teen movie. The socially-conscious dramedy is based on Jennifer Mathieu’s young adult novel of the same name, and Amy Poehler’s production company, Paper Kite Productions, is behind bringing the story to the screen. Poehler also directed and starred in the film about a shy 16-year-old named Vivian (Hadley Robinson) who is inspired by the underground feminist punk movement that her mom (Poehler) was a part of when she was a teenager. Vivian publishes a zine that denounces sexism at her school, which ends up sparking a revolution. Poehler shared in a recent interview why Robinson was the right actor to play the lead. “There’s a lot of internal [turmoil] she has to express,” Poehler noted. “Hadley is incredible at that. She’s tender, curious, and can do so much when she’s listening.” Also keep an eye out for performances from names like Patrick Schwarzenegger, Marcia Gay Harden and Ike Barinholtz when Netflix releases Moxie on March 3.
Coming 2 America
Fans of Coming to America have had to wait for more than thirty years for the film’s sequel, but star Eddie Murphy recently shared with Entertainment Tonight why he thinks the second film will live up to the expectations. “There was no pressure because when we decided we were gonna make the movie, we had worked on the script for four years, and we had the script right,” he asserted. “So once the script is right, you know, there’s no pressure.” Murphy reprises his role of Prince Akeem for the sequel, except now he’s king of Zamunda. Once again, he travels to New York with his right-hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall), but this time he’s in search of his recently-discovered son (Jermaine Fowler). Besides reprising their lead roles, Murphy and Hall also don some impressive prosthetics to play various supporting characters like they did in the first film. Other returning actors include Shari Headley, James Earl Jones and John Amos. Be sure to also look out for performances from Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones, who will bring new characters to the sequel film. You can catch all these names and more when Coming 2 America starts streaming on Amazon Prime come March 5.
Godzilla vs. Kong
Fans of the Warner Bros. MonsterVerse series will finally get its first installment that features Godzilla and Kong sharing the screen. And if the trailer is any indication, it’s going to be an impressive showdown between the two titans. The official synopsis calls it a “spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.” Kyle Chandler and Millie Bobby Brown reprise their respective roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters of Dr. Mark Russell and Madison Russell for the upcoming film, whose star-studded cast also includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Alexander Skarsgård and Demián Bichir. The latter recently told Variety that the film is “technically superb” and “a beautiful thing to watch.” Viewers can see Godzilla vs. Kong in theaters or via HBO Max upon its March 31 release.
Moxie, Coming 2 America and Godzilla vs. Kong might not be dominating this year’s awards season buzz, but don’t let the upcoming films fly under your radar. Each houses an impressive roster of talent and brings its own unique offering to the home viewer. If you’re looking for a socially-conscious dramedy, a long-awaited comedy sequel or a monster movie packed with A-listers, March is a good month for adding fresh titles to your watchlist.
